Invention Vineyards

A Heath Family Brand

By Lorelei Helmke

Brian and Jennifer Heath purchased Grape Creek Vineyards in 2006. Today, they are a powerhouse in the Texas wine industry offering direct-to-consumer wines from their four wineries.

They source their fruit mostly from their own vineyards, so they maintain control. Heath Family owns vineyards in the Texas High Plains, Paso Robles, and on site at their wineries around Fredericksburg.

Invention Vineyards, the newest brand for Heath, offers a unique take on Texas wines.

The longtime winemaker, Jason Englert, is curating wines in traditional styles. These wines have the elegance of the places they grow in the Old World.

Invention is located just south of Fredericksburg on Highway 16.

Viognier 2022

Lodi, California

Brilliant shades of straw gleam in the glass. On the nose Meyer Lemon and tangerine zest prevail with hints of Braeburn apples, orange blossom, honeysuckle, and vanilla. This bouquet seems to hover over the glass making for a delightful experience. Balanced acidity makes this mouthwatering wine.

Pair with a rich sea bass or Chevre cheese.

Mourvèdre Rosé 2022

Texas High Plains

Eye-catching wild salmon pink color graces the glass while a bouquet of strawberries, cranberries, Rainer cherries, anise and minerals greet the nose. A light styled rosé like one you might find in the South of France.

Perfect Potation with a light lunch and to share with friends.

Sangiovese 2021

Texas High Plains

Earthy aromas of sundried tomatoes leap out of this light garnet hued wine. On further reflection, ripe dark cherries, red currants, and a hint of cardamon round out this smooth libation. Subtle tannins and healthy acidity make this a fabulous food wine,

Serve with Tuscan Bolognese.

RB (Right Bank) 2021

Texas High Plains

Merlot and Cabernet Franc, just like the wines from St. Emillion. An excellent effort creating a Texas wine in the Bordeaux tradition. Dark ruby in color, upfront fruit essences of cherry, licorice, dark chocolate, leather, tobacco leaf and hints of smoke.

A great compliment to barbecued chicken.

Tempranillo 2021

Texas High Plains

Almost brick red, the traditional color of Rioja wines. This tempranillo offers up terroir driven minerality with scents of light cherries, mission figs, dried cranberries, and rose petals — soft tannins and a clean finish.

Dried sausages and Manchego cheese are a must.

Soleluce 2021

Super Tuscan Blend

Texas High Plains

A sensual, soft red wine that shows ripe black berries, raspberries, cherries, sweet licorice, and hints of clove. This is a most enjoyable wine with a long finish.

Florentina is a superb match for these silky tannins.

LB (Left Bank) 2021

Texas High Plains

Like Margaux, bold and feminine at the same time. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec blend to give lush aromas of dark fruit, smoke, saddle leather, baking spice, tobacco, red roses and the mineral qualities of graphite.

Wagyu Hamburger — perfect!

P2 (P squared)

Petit Sirah and Petit Verdot

Dark and Rich – Big and Bold

This is a crowd-pleasing red with a perfume of blackberries, dark currents, cloves, dates, and dark plums. A sensual long finish makes this a great wine all by itself or serve with roast beef or curry kabobs.

Riesling 2022

Texas High Plains

A delicate, off-dry white that exhibits orange blossoms, honeysuckle hints of minerals and ambrosia apples. A clean finish and hints of honey make it a lovely choice to drink with spicy Thai food.
