Craving fresh water buffalo milk, a gelato, or an assortment of cheeses that include mozzarella, blanco fresco, feta and ricotta? All without having to take a flight to Italy?
Welcome to a foodie paradise in Texas Hill County — Orobianco, or “white gold”. Since its inception, Phil Gilglio, whose family is originally from southern Italy, and partners Jason Peeler and Adam Thompson have carved a niche market for themselves.
The first and central creamery is located in Blanco, where master cheese maker Adam Thompson churns his artistry from a Buffalo herd managed by Peeler, who hails from Floresville. The three partners each have skillsets that allow them to produce top quality products for the Central Texas region. “We are fortunate to have Jason’s long history of animal husbandry, along with Adam’s significant experience producing high quality cheeses and overseeing creamery operations,” Giglio says.
The second Orobianco location is in Stonewall, which carries more retail items, such as imported specialty items directly from Italy, wines, canned fish, jarred sauces, specialty pastas, olive oils, cookbooks and more. Gourmands can stock their kitchen shelves with a flurry of Italian food items as well as grabbing a sandwich or pizza to go. Specialty coffees are also a must. Be sure to sit and sip an Affigato, comprised of the house-blend espresso with a dollop of a flavored gelato on top.
And the most recent Orobianco location which opened in June is located on East Main Street in Fredericksburg. Stroll down Main Street and stop to cool off with a tasty gelato treat. An abundance of flavors are offered and many ingredients are locally sourced or come directly from Italy.
“Italy and Texas are similar in that agriculture is very central to both cultures,” Giglio said, pointing out similarities. Orobianco’s new space is bright and cheery with vibrant yellows and pops of blue that originate from his logo and branding. One can leisurely lick or sip inside this cheery location or stroll through the courtyard which has ample seating.
Giglio and his partners strive to produce a top-tier product unique to the market. “We try to draw inspiration from Italians’ dedication to quality,” Giglio said.
A visit to any of the three locations will be inspiring for any foodie that is looking to bring a bit of Italy to Texas.
