Michael Ros Winery

Texas wine with California Style

By Lorelei Helmke

Turn right on Old San Antonio Road leaving Fredericksburg, and wine lovers will find a spot where they just might spend the entire day. The attractive design of the tasting room harkens thoughts of Italy, where wineries are often built in the hillside as Michael Ros Winery has done. Outdoor perches with incredible views as well as an indoor setting that is comfortably modern.

Michael and Rosann Mitrione have created a fabulous concept in a short period of time. In 2018, they purchased acreage in Brownfield to plant vines. In 2021, they relocated to Fredericksburg to construct their winery on Old San Antonio Road.

A commitment to the environment shows in their water filtration system and the repurposed old pecan trees their arborist said had to be removed. Michael made the beautiful tasting room tables himself from those trees.

Michael and Rosann have succeeded in producing Texas wines with California style. Their efforts have been rewarded with many Gold, Double Gold and Best of Class awards from San Antonio and Houston Rodeo Completions, the San Francisco Chronicle competition and others.

They may be newcomers to the industry, but their juice shows talent and resolve to make extraordinary wines.

Take that right turn to find this little slice of divine.

Albariño 2023

Narra Vineyards- Texas High Plains

This San Antonio Rodeo Competition Double Gold winning white offers up bright aromas of green apple, lime zest and gentle hints of honeysuckle. The soft acidity and mouth-filling texture delight the palate.

Enjoy this one while it lasts with grilled shrimp and green pesto.

Picpoul Blanc 2023

Michael Ros Vineyard – Texas High Plains

Light hay color shines in the glass while crisp notes of lime, white flowers and Gala apples rise up.  There is a hit of creaminess that balances the acidity beautifully as it lays on the tongue.

Pairs well with goat cheese and spicy Thai cuisine.

Trebbiano 2023

Buena Suerte Vineyard – Texas High Plains

The judges at the Houston Rodeo Wine Competition loved this one so much they awarded it Texas Class Champion. A bouquet of honeydew melon, Anjou pear and lemon greet the nose. In the mouth a hint of almond comes through. It has a long finish and a bit of tingle on the finish.

Serve this with Fontina cheese and Fettuccini with zucchini, basil and cream cheese.

Bisaccia 2023

White Blend – Texas High Plains

Named for the town near Naples from where Michael’s grandfather hailed, Bisaccia shows lovely white peach, orange blossom and Meyer lemon aromas. It has a round body and subtle acidity with notes of sweet cream.

A great accompaniment to grilled redfish or caprese flatbread.

Roussanne 2021

Oaked

Michael Ros Vineyard – Texas High Plains

For the Chardonnay lovers, this medium straw-hued wine gives whiffs of apples, pears, citrus and pineapples. There are hints of butterscotch and hazelnut.

It does not go through malolactic fermentation, so when paired with buttered popcorn, your tastebuds will rejoice. Also, will pair beautifully with shrimp scampi.

Roussanne 2023

Unoaked

Farmhouse Vineyard – Texas High Plains

Lush aromas of Golden Delicious apple, juicy peach, honeysuckle blossom, and citrus fruits. This wine feels soft and full-bodied, quite pleasing.

A good choice if hoisin is on the menu or you’re hosting a crawfish boil.

Sangiovese Rosé 2023

Michael Ros Vineyard – Texas High Plains

This wine is made in the vineyard. They specifically pick the east facing grapes a few weeks before harvesting the west facing grapes for their Sangiovese. Super light blush in color, the wine offers impactful aromas of strawberries and roses. This is a fresh, delightful rosé perfectly balanced.

Drink on its own or with a midday salad.

Dolcetto 2022

Michael Ros Vineyards – Texas High Plains

A garnet-hued unpretentious red wine that shows a bouquet of cherries, red roses, mission figs and tea. There are notable tannins and hints of smoke on this medium bodied red.

Perfect for barbecued chicken pizza or roasted tomatoes and eggplant.

Tempranillo 2020

Michael Ros Vineyard – Texas Hill Country

A rich perfume of cigar box, red cherries, violets, anise, black olive and white peppercorn ascend from this bright garnet hued wine.

It’s a great match for cured meats, sausages and grilled meats.

Malbec 2020

Michael Ros Vineyard – Texas High Plains

The nose on this red wine is dominated by black currant, fig, Rainer cherry and tobacco leaf. Dig further and find a dusting of cocoa. The soft tannins create an amiable finish.

Pair this one with roasted pork or beef tenderloin.

Tannat 2021

Narra Vineyards – Texas High Plains

There is a hint of peppery spice in this deep ruby-toned wine. Essences of briary berries, saddle leather, cloves and tobacco leaf are prominent. If you examine further, a touch of orange zest brightens it up.

It will complement blue cheeses, game meats like bacon wrapped Nilgai and dark chocolate desserts.
